All thanks and glory for all the amazing songs we heard this year, goes to the producers. Let’s just be honest, some of the most popular songs released this year wouldn’t get a replay if the production wasn’t so addictive and made you want to get up and dance. Not to mention, half of afrobeats artists can’t actually sing. The industry owes producers a lot more credit than they get. From “Soco” to “Ye”, So mi So”, they have done a job well done.

 10. DJ COUBLON

DJ Coublon is a highly respected Nigerian music producer and sound engineer. He has written and produced a lot of our favorite artist best songs since he had emerged on the scene a few years back. He had a quiet year by his standards in 2018, but still was able to remind us why we initially loved him. This year he produced the fan favorite record “Aya Mi” by Mayorkun off his latest album TMOL. Kizz Daniel’s ‘Maye’ off his latest album No Bad Songz. He also produced ‘Oh My Gosh’ by Yemi Alade.

9. SPELLZ

Spellz is responsible for a number of hits this year. He is credited for producing the smash single ‘Askamaya’ for the talented singer Teni. He produced “Crazy Love” for Flavour & “Commado” for Wizkid and Ceeza Milli. He also produced with his frequent collaborator Tiwa Savage, on hit records such as “Tiwa Vibe” and “Lova Lova”. He rightly deserves his spot on this list.

8. DJ MAPHORISA

DJ Maphorisa is a South-African music producer and DJ. A lot of people might not know too much of him outside the diaspora but he’s currently one of the go-to producers in house and hiphop in South Africa. He has worked with some of the biggest names in the game from Wizkid, Black Coffee, Drake & Major Lazer to name a few. In 2018, DJ Maphorisa produced the smash hit single ”Midnight Starring” ”Makhe” ”iWalk Ye Phara”.

7. PHANTOM

Phantom did not make as much noise this year unlike his other peers on this list, but he made an impact when he needed too. His notable work this year came on his production to arguably the biggest anthem of the year “Ye” by Burna Boy. He is also credited for producing ”Master Groove” by Wizkid.

6. SARZ

Sarz is a veteran in the game. He has manage to keep his name a float in the game all year round while also working on his brand of upcoming acts. He is the mastermind behind the Skepta and Wizkid ‘Energy’. A song that has been buzzing since its release and you can’t help but sing along too wherever you are. He worked again with Ninola and produced ‘Bana’ after the success of their previous work on ‘Maradona’. He produced ”Balenciego” by Flash – an upcoming new musical act that Sarz has under his guidance. He also produced the street anthems “Diet” by DJ Enimoney and ”Lakukulala” by Oladips.

5. JULS

Ghanian music producer & DJ Juls, has had an incredible 2018. He has helped shaped the sound of Afrobeat since he burst on to the scene a few year back. He has since worked with some of the biggest acts in the game. Summer of 2018 saw the release of ”So Mi So” which was produced and directed(Video) by Juls himself. It was instantly a fan favorite and one of the biggest tunes that was released this year. Juls and Wande Coal decided to bless the fan again with another collaborative tunes titled ”Sister Girl” which is gaining positive reviews since its release. He also collaborated with a fellow Londoner rapper, Kojey Radical on a bass-heavy tune titled ”Normal”. A video which he also Directed. Not a bad year by his standards.

4. SPEROACHBEATZ

SperoachBeatz is a well respected producer in the industry. He responsible for creating Davido critical-acclaim singles “Assurance” & “Nwa Baby”. When the single & video dropped, it went viral globally. He is also the man behind the legendary 2face Idibia single “Amaka”. Fans will definitely be on the look out for more hit from him coming 2019.

3. NORTHBOI

NorthBoi hasn’t been on the scene too long but he has since solidifies himself as one of the most exciting new talented producer in the game. He is known for producing arguable the biggest single of 2018 “Soco” for his Starboy affiliates. According to Northboi, he started working on the beat in 2016 with Ceeza Milli, who ended up connecting him to Wizkid. Fast forward to 2018, “Soco” was birth and the rest is history. Since its release in late February, “Soco” has been the most viewed Nigerian music video of 2018. He co-produced Wizkid lastest single “Fever”. Northboi also worked with DMW afropop star, Mayorkun, helping him create one of his hottest singles ”Posh” off his latest album titled TMOL.

2. FRESH VDM

DAMN! Fresh on the beat!!!!! Born as Bello Adeshina aka Fresh VDM had his breakthrough late 2017 with the smash hit single he produced for Davido ”FIA” and he has been unstoppable ever since. The Togolese producer is known for his signature tag ‘Damn Fresh On The Beat’ has been an in-house producer and engineer for label mates in DMW (Davido Music Worldwide). In 2018, his list of production is staggering with hits such as ”FIA”, ”AZA”, ”Mind”, ”Twisted”, ”Aje”, ”Nwa Baby”, ”Red Handed”, DJ ECool’s ”ADA”. Some will argue he deserves to hold the #1 spot on the list, which wouldn’t be a bad take honestly.

1. KILLERTUNES

You will often hear the phrase “Producers do not get enough credit” which happens to be the case for Killertunes. You often hear his signature tag “Shabalistic” at the beginning or end of his records. In 2018, no other producer has had a more creatively outstanding year than Killertunes. Consistency and hard work have made him be one the most sought-after producer in Afrobeat today. Throughout the year, Killertunes delivered bangers such as Wizkid’s ”Manya” & “Gucci Snake”, Kizz Daniels ”Yeba”, Mayorkun’s ”BoBo”, DJ Spinall’s ”Nowo” & ”Baba”, Duncan Mighty & Wizkid’s ”Fake Love”, Olamide’s “Motigbana”. Talk about hit record after hit record. Whatever he touched this year was going straight to the top of the charts. At the BEATZ Awards he took home 3 awards – including Producer of the Year. He has been outstanding all year, therefore, he deserves the #1 spot.
