The Mayor Of Lagos is a Lecture Room For Other Nigerian Music Acts To Take a Cue At Creating Noteworthy Music.

“For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.”

Mayorkun’s The Mayor Of Lagos album utterly deserves all the accolades most especially as it currently sits atop the music charts as you read.

We feel that particular type of way 10 years after 9ice stunned the music industry, warming his way and cementing his place in our hearts with his Gongo Aso album – as we can comfortably attest to witnessing another classic worthy album (in foresight) but from the indelible artistry of a totally different individual that lies in the talent of The Mayor Of Lagos – 30 Billion Gang’s Mayorkun.

If we had any idea as it regards what another album from the DMW label as usual was going to be like – we would have prepared ourselves for this efficiently saturated dose of creativity and musical dexterity that lies in this melodious and relatable body of work Mayorkun has blessed us with.

No ear heard this coming, where Mayorkun would show the mainstream music industry what it is to create a personal art translated in an album. Mayorkun took his time amidst personal vulnerabilities and struggles to submit his present phase as vaguely told in his “Feelings Intro” track. One can only concur to the lavish blessings through prayers coming from the artist’s biological mum in the concluding seconds of the same track. Standardly, it is rare particularly in this sonic climate to come across music that immediately leaves nothing less than a sumptuous taste in your mouth after experiencing it. By heart, it is very easy to count out artists around here and in this generation, consciously creating a body of work that is so terrific as Mayorkun has done – GOOD MUSIC !

In all of the 14 tracks, one must also appraise and complement Mayorkun’s outstanding melodic word play, lyrical proficiency and rhythmic fluidity where he owned his ring bringing his A-game on as he features a plethora of talents production wise and via artiste collaborations.

Off the records, as much as we think D’banj needs to employ the service of songwriters, no one would have murdered that Oshepete vibe with the mayor of Lagos other than koko master – an album that features other fantastic talents in DMW’s Davido, Patoranking, and Ghana’s finest, Sarkodie, whose delivery on “Jonze Me” made sure the album never lacked that juice – with emphasis.

The Mayor Of Lagos album can be likened to an ambrosial plate of jollof rice whose tantalizing aroma already gets one’s mouth salivating – and with a fantastic concoction of brilliant production from DJ Coublon, Fresh VDM, Phantom, Kiddominant, Killertunes, Lussh, North Boi, Speroach, Cracker Mallo and impressive sound engineering from TeeY Mix, STG, and Mixx Monsta – #TMOL is nothing short of that.

The Mayor Of Lagos will be to music lovers an unforgettable piece of work that will stand the test of times and be a stellar point of reference for a long time to come.
