Today marks a great day both in fashion and diversity.
Ghanaian-born and London-raised, Edward Enninful has been announced as the newest EIC for British Vogue. Enninful has an extensive resume filled with over 25 years of experience and work that includes Italian Vogue, American Vogue, and W Magazine.
When he was quite young, Enninful and his family moved to London. It was there at the age of 16, while on a train, Enninful was scouted as a model. Then at the age of 18, Enninful became the youngest person ever to serve as fashion director of i-D magazine. His appointment to W Magazine in 2011 helped boost ad pages by 16% in 2012. He also led Vogue Italia’s “Black Issue,” an extremely successful issue forcing Condé Nast to print 40,000 copies.
Enninful has worn many hats throughout his career and it is no secret that the fashion industry recognizes his talent. The British monarchy acknowledged his contribution to fashion, making him and OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) – last October. An OBE award is given to someone who has a major local role in any activity and also includes people whose work has made them known nationally in their chosen.
In a world that lacks diversity, this is a step in the direction. Without a doubt, Enninful will breathe new life into such a renowned magazine. Enninful starts his new position on August.
